Meaningful Quotes From Unlikely Sources

They say that television melts your brain. It makes you dumb, kills brain cells or contributes to the downfall of society as a whole. I'm here to dispute that.

Although I don't watch a lot of television myself (hardly any, actually), television certainly can be educational. While shows on the History Channel or TLC can help the watcher grow and learn in the conventional sense, some atypical TV shows can go a bit further, telling us more about life.

Here are three quotes from unlikely sources that can be applied to everyday life.

"Every man for himself is not going to work...if we can't live together we're gonna die alone."

The quote that main character Jack Sheppard from the ABC drama LOST utters in a particularly dramatic season one scene outlines a basic premise that we should all consider. Though his situation (stranded on an uncharted, unknown, supernatural island on a fictional TV show) is different than most of ours, the idea behind living together as a society, putting our differences aside for the collective good is something everyone should be able to align with.

"The circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant; it is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are."

Uttered in a moment of insight from a cartoon, this quote comes from Mewtwo from the hugely popular kids series "Pokemon." Despite the unlikely source, this quote is another by which many people can choose to live their lives. Some things are out of our control, what we can control, however is what we do and where we head in our lives. Choosing whether to help others in their times of need or focus on yourself gives insight into who you really are as a person.

"When you do things rightpeople won't be sure you've done anything at all."
A final notion coming from a cartoon, this particular quote comes from the popular TV series "Futurama." The quote gives some strong insight into helping others without self-gain or self-fulfillment outwardly present. Helping move others to action, giving them aid when necessary or keeping your friends and family happy through themselves are great examples of not just doing right, but instilling it in others.
